What to Do If Your Vehicle Breaks Down

Breaking Down on a Local Road

Move your vehicle off the road if possible and switch on your hazard warning lights. Use sidelights in darkness or poor visibility.

Keep yourself and your passengers away from moving traffic. Never stand between your vehicle and approaching vehicles.

 

Breaking Down on a Motorway

If possible, leave at the next junction or stop at a motorway service area. Otherwise, move left into an emergency area or onto the hard shoulder, stopping as far left as possible. Turn your wheels left and switch on your hazard lights.

If it is safe, everyone should leave through the side furthest from traffic. Wait well away from the vehicle and traffic, behind a safety barrier where available, checking for drops or other hazards.

Do not attempt repairs, place a warning triangle on the motorway or return to your vehicle while waiting.

Use the emergency telephone for help. If you cannot exit safely, or have not stopped near an emergency telephone, call 999 and ask for the police. If you cannot leave safely, remain belted in with your hazard lights on.
